A Study Social Support and Ego Integrity in the Elderly

Abstract
This study was done to know the relationship between perceived social support and ego integrity in the Elderly. The subjects consisted of 173 active and communicable persons aged over 65 living in Kwang Ju. Data was collected through interview with questionnaire from July 10 to 29, 1992. The questionnaires were the Scale of Social Support and the Health Assessment Scale for the Elderly. Analysis of data were done by percentage, t-test, ANOVA, and Person Correlation. The results were summarized as follows: 1. The average score of ego integrity in the elderly were 93.9 of total 155, and related to religion(F=8.08, P<.01), educational level(F=5.90, P<.001), income(F=5.58, P<.001), perceived health status(F=6.50, P<.001), number of persons living with(F=6.64, P<.001), people who was living with(F=6.62, P<.01), social supporter(F=2.73, P<.001), satisfaction with social support(F=4.95, P<.001), frequency of social support(F=5.86, P<.001) and similarity of life style to supporter(F=6.64, P<.001). 2. The average score of perceived social support in the elderly was 139.5 of total 200. The subjects perceived significantly high social support in situation of living with their spouse(F=13.91, P<.001), having any educational level(F=2.78, P<.05), having only one or two family(F=7.42, P<.001) and spouse who was living with(F=5.79, P<.01). 3. Social support and ego integrity were positively related(r=.57979, P<.001). The more elderlies perceived social support, the higher the elderlies¡¯ ego integrity.
